Powershifting, no-lift shifting, or flat foot shifting is a method of changing gears in a manual transmission where you do not take your foot off the gas pedal. Unfortunately, this shifting method is very tough on clutches, so there's a right way and a wrong way of doing it. Cadillac, with the CT4-V Blackwing, has developed a methodology to powershifting that maintains boost pressure of the twin-turbo V6 engine, while reducing the engine load during the shift. This clever trick involves altering ignition timing, wastegate control, and the bypass valve control. In the end, the desired result is great - a seamless manual transmission shift, all without lifting your foot off the throttle.

*Clarification!* Does the clutch still have to absorb the engine vs transmission speed difference during a power shift? Yes! But with the delayed ignition timing (or some tuners will use spark cut), you put the engine in a low load state, so that when you re-engage the clutch, absorbing the speed difference is easier because there's not a bunch of torque going to the clutch (it's instead being used to make exhaust pressure, to keep the turbos ready). And once the clutch is re-engaged, ignition timing goes back to usual and you're right back at full power.

@Infamous Grizzly this addresses how the finestrelles record is possible

    • scootbmx01

@Infamous Grizzly as for finestrelles, I assume you're referencing the Guinness world record in which case you need to go have a look at the specifics of how that record is possible. Anything else you want make yourself look foolish at?

    • scootbmx01

@Infamous Grizzly wait so you aren't basing it off names? So why keep bringing it up then? You keep going on about factual evidence but haven't yet provided one shred of proof for it. Just because you say nasa and space x are lying it doesn't mean they are. As for proof though there literally hundred of videos alone on this very platform disproving various flat out theories and challenges. But yet again you still haven't answered my one simple question, where is the edge? The "plane" part of aeroplane is literally because of the wings, if you ever paid attention in history you'd no this from the Wright brothers

    • Infamous Grizzly
      Infamous Grizzly

@scootbmx01 yeah Finestrelles should be blocked by 9.41 miles of curvature according to globe math. It's an impossible photograph assuming a spherical earth.

Great explaination. But how does it work with supercharge? What is the process with exaust in supercharge since it has nothing to do to produce boost. Thanks

In other words, delayed timing ignition allows for spinny spinny fast without so much pushy pushy hard so your clutch and flywheel can pretend to be a torque converter.

Ah so this is why Americans have a reputation for completely destroying gearboxes when they last fine everywhere else. Just mashing the gears from one to the next without any attempt at rev-matching or letting the synchros match rotational speeds. I had wondered why there's lots of people complaining about breaking ND MX5 gearboxes in America but not in other countries.

I used to speed shift my 69 Road Runner all the time. On the street and for T.O.'s at the track. Eventually, it would rip some of the lining off of the clutch disc, but after a couple years.

Easiest way to do it, don't do it. Just pick your foot up. As consumer friendly as cars are now, they need to become cheaper to start driving a new market. We need to move away from packing our cars full of silicon, we're already at the point that's making up 40% of the common car. Not even the car, between software and hardware it's in silica. WHY? We want fast unsafe cars CHEAP damnit!

Timely subject! I've been debating how the no lift shift worked when factored to the trans, clutch and engine. Well stated!! I'm a Twin Turbo guy so this should work well in my case. I'll consult my tuner on the timing/fuel cutoff in-between shifts @ the Red line. My monster clutch is pretty durable but I don't want to push the limits. Great video and perfectly explained! Thank you!

like your channel. could you please do a topic on EVAP systems? EVAP system is complicated on turbo engines. Vacuum sources could be manifold vacuum(low engine load) or turbo inlet pipe. Some manufacturer use ejector valves for suction. I am curious about the engineering requirement and process for EVAP system. What's the suction/ flow requirement for fuel vapor? Would ECU adjusts for the additional fuel vapor? NA engine has a way simpler design using manifold vacuum. Does EVAP still work under high load on NA engines? Is the turbo EVAP superior because it can work on all conditions? What about during coasting, throttle is open to reduce engine braking, no vacuum anywhere?

If you’re shifting at the limiter then there’s no significant RPM increase when the clutch is pressed with the throttle on the floor. A bit more clutch wear than having the more sophisticated system, but flat foot shifting in a car that doesn’t have those systems isn’t automatically detrimental to the clutch or trans
